One of the items we get a lot of during the summer is plums. I personally love plums, but sometimes it seems like we get an overload of them. What’s a person to do? I asked a bunch of friends for ideas and this is what we came up with:
- Cut up and top your morning oatmeal.
- Make a plum sauce! (here’s a recipe!)
- Throw in a smoothie.
- Infuse into vodka for a plum extract or tasty alcoholic beverage
- Make baby food!
- Puree and use to replace up to half of oil in recipes.
- Chop up and toss into muffins.
- So I trimmed and quartered the whole lot. The whole family have been loving them as a quick go to snack and they have stayed fresh for almost a week now!
- Dehydrate.
- Toss into a salad (this is one of my favorite ways to use up fruit).
- Chop up and mix into yogurt.
- Grilled plums.
- Toss into a fruit salad.
- Make a salad dressing.
- Make a plum salsa (use any peach salsa recipe and sub plums for peaches)
There you have it! Sometimes we all need a little push to think outside the box. Thanks to Karmen, Lindsay, Amaree, Janie, Jennifer, and Melanie for their ideas!
I also made a plum jam with my plums a few weeks ago. Then we ended up using the jam to top french toast and later as part of a BBQ sauce. YUM!
My families favorite way to eat plums is frozen. Halve them and remove the pit then freeze. They make a fabulous summertime treat and are much healthier than popsicles or other frozen treats.
