Pear-Apple Crumble

This is a quick and easy recipe for a cross between a tart and a pie. You have all the flavors of an apple pie with the crisp sweet addition of pears. And to save on the pie crusts, use a crumble topping instead.

Pear-Apple Crumble

Ingredients

    For the filling:
  • 4 small Granny Smith apples
  • 4 small pears
  • 2 tbsp flour or corn starch
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • For the oat crumble topping:
  • 1/2 cup oats, not instant
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/8 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

    For the filling:
  1. Peel, core, and slice apples and pears into thin pieces.
  2. Add lemon, sugar, brown sugar, spout and cinnamon and mix well.
  3. Place all filling ingredients into prepared pie crust.
  4. Chop 2 tbsp of butter into small pieces and place al over the top of the filling.
  5. For the oat crumble topping:
  6. It it's easier to mix in a pastry blender but if you're in a hurry...
  7. Chop butter into small pieces.
  8. Add flour, oats, sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon.
  9. Incorporate butter into dry ingredients as much as possible. Press and mix until you get a crumbly-texture.
  10. Layer oat crumble on top of filling.
  11. Cover loosely with foil.
  12. Bake at 400 degrees for 45-50 minutes. Remove foil the last 15 minutes to crisp the crumble topping.
  13. Cool on a cooling rack.

  4. This sounds like a wonderful recipe. Does anybody know how much lemon to add? It’s not under the ingredient list but says to add it in the second step. Any idea?
